Aiden Owens

BSc (Hons) Facilities and Building Services Management.
FETAC Level 5 Engineering Technology.

Having worked in various sectors including Site Foreman within the construction industry, Aiden became a member of Carlow Fire & Rescue Service in 2008.

In 2012 he returned to full-time education achieving an overall distinction in Engineering Technology and was nominated for Waldron Student of the year. Aiden continued into 3rd level education at Institute of Technology Carlow, obtaining his BSc Degree in Facilities and Building Services Management. It was during this time in college that Aiden envisaged the concept of using BIM for operational purposes in the event of a fire emergency, while also assisting building control officers in the assessment process under the technical guidance documents Part B and Part M.

As part of his third year studies, Aiden obtained a 13 week full-time placement with building control at Carlow Fire Service Headquarters. During this time Aiden obtained further knowledge regarding the assessment process under Part B and Part M building regulations. Furthermore, Aiden was given the responsibility as a key member in designing the new training building located at Hacketstown Training Centre.

For his Dissertation, Aiden decided to continue with his research into the concept which he entitled F.I.R.E.S (Fully Integrated Rescue Egress Strategy) where his classmates and Fire Service colleagues assisted in experiments and proof of the concept. As a result from the research and possible benefits of the concept, a research masters was offered to Aiden by IT Carlow. Aiden was unable to accept the research masters at that time. However, Conor Jordan was able to continue the research, thus allowing the concept to evolve over time.

Aiden is also an Energy Consultant with 2Eva and has recently gained his qualification as a building energy rating assessor (BER) and (Nearly Zero Energy Buildings) NZEB supervisor.
