Dan O’Sullivan

Dan is an architect, lecturer and researcher with 36 years’ experience across the construction industry in Ireland and the UK. During this time, he has worked with some of the leading architectural practices, including Scott Tallon Walker in Dublin and The Manser Practice in London, as well as specialist consultancies such as CH2M Hill (now part of Jacobs).

His diverse and comprehensive range of projects include pharma, retail, residential, industrial, airport, hotels and a wide variety of smaller scale developments. As a project leader, he has led and been responsible for teams delivering projects at all scales and through many different procurement methods.

Since 2005, while continuing to provide consultancy in the construction industry, Dan has lectured within the Department of the Built Environment at Institute of Technology Carlow. He has taught across the Department, including on the Civil Engineering, Construction and Architectural Technology programmes. He has been Programme Director for Architectural Technology and a member of Academic Council. His specialist areas include Construction Legislation and Building Technology. During his tenure, the Architectural Technology programmes have achieved accreditation from both the RIAI (Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland) and CIAT (Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists); IT Carlow students have also been consistent prize-winners in the student competitions organised by both Institutes.

Dan has also been highly involved in applied research over the past 10 years. Working within the engCORE Research Unit, he has undertaken investigations focused around biomass & energy in buildings, as well as fire safety. These projects have included specific studies into miscanthus in Ireland and also working with Conor Jordan on utilising BIM (Building Information Modelling) to enhance fire safety. Dan has successfully supervised four separate Masters by Research projects, with two of these being competitively awarded supportive grant aid from the Irish Research Council.

Dan is a Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (FRIAI)
